Reban Farms Homestead has been around since 1908, and we are proud of our Saskatchewan roots. We enjoy the cattle lifestyle and the wholesome food it allows us to produce. We are grateful to have a farm out by Petrofka Bridge along the North Saskatchewan River south of Blaine Lake.

About This Series

Welcome to “Ask Aubrey,” a Q&A series with Aubrey Reban, cattle rancher and head of the Reban Farm family in Petrofka, Saskatchewan. Each post features one of the most common questions Aubrey is asked about ranching, farming practices, and cattle care. His goal is to give you a transparent, straightforward look into how Reban Farms raises its animals and cares for the land.

Why We Only Sell Beef in Bulk and Why That Is Actually Better for You

Sometimes people ask: Why do I have to buy a quarter cow? Can I just buy a few steaks?

It is a fair question, and we hear it often. A quarter cow is our minimum order, and we understand that sounds like a big commitment if you have never bought beef this way before. But when you break down what you are actually getting, the math tells a different story than most people expect.

The average Canadian consumer is paying around $19.00 per pound when you average out the common cuts of beef available at retail. Steaks, roasts, ground beef, it all averages out to a high cost per pound once the retailer, the distributor, and the wholesaler have each taken their margin along the way. At Reban Farms, our quarter, half, and whole animal packages are priced at $8.50 per pound based on carcass weight.

A quarter cow works out to approximately 180 pounds of carcass weight, which translates to a freezer full of beef with a standard breakdown of roughly one-third roasts, one-third steaks, and one-third ground beef. If you order a half or more, you can customize that breakdown to suit how your household actually cooks. You are not locked into a fixed ratio if your family runs through ground beef quickly or prefers to keep more steaks on hand.

The 4.5lb Cross Rib Roast on the right cost on average $7.50 less than regular store prices – and the quality of meat is far superior!

Beyond the cost, buying in bulk from a farm that raises its own animals means you know exactly what you are getting. Every order comes from our herd, processed at our local butcher, cut and wrapped, frozen, and delivered directly to your door at no additional charge. There is no middleman. There is no mystery.

A well-stocked chest freezer also has a practical payoff that goes beyond price. You stop making emergency grocery store trips for protein. You have premium cuts available any night of the week. And once most families have done it once, they tell us they would never go back to buying retail beef again.

We are not asking you to buy more than you need. We are offering you a better deal than the grocery store, with significantly better beef, from people you can actually call if you have a question about what you are eating, personally delivered to your door. That is what bulk buying from a local farm really means.

Have a question about our farm, our cattle, or how we raise our beef? Send it our way, and Aubrey may answer it in a future post.
