Reban Farms Homestead has been around since 1908, and we are proud of our Saskatchewan roots. We enjoy the cattle lifestyle and the wholesome food it allows us to produce. We are grateful to have a farm out by Petrofka Bridge along the North Saskatchewan River south of Blaine Lake.
About This Series
Welcome to “Ask Aubrey,” a Q&A series with Aubrey Reban, cattle rancher and head of the Reban Farm family in Petrofka, Saskatchewan. Each post features one of the most common questions Aubrey is asked about ranching, farming practices, and cattle care. His goal is to give you a transparent, straightforward look into how Reban Farms raises its animals and cares for the land.
Why does everyone keep talking about protein right now, and where does beef fit in?
Protein has become one of the biggest conversations in North American health and nutrition, and for good reason. Whether you are an athlete, a busy parent, or someone simply trying to make better food choices, protein is central to nearly every meaningful health goal. Muscle maintenance, satiety, metabolic health, recovery, all of it traces back to getting enough of the right kind of protein.

Beef is one of the most complete protein sources available. It contains all the essential amino acids the body cannot produce on its own, and it delivers them in a highly bioavailable form, meaning your body can actually absorb and use what it takes in. That is not true of every protein source, and it matters more than most nutrition labels will tell you.
But not all beef is created equal, and that is where how an animal is raised comes into the picture. Our cattle at Reban Farms graze open pasture through the summer months and are finished on our own homegrown forages and cereal grains, using approximately half the grain that a conventional feedlot would. That approach results in leaner beef, with a fat profile that more closely reflects what pasture-raised beef is known for, including higher concentrations of beneficial fatty acids compared to heavily grain-fed alternatives.
Beyond the nutritional composition, there is the question of what is not in the beef. Our animals are raised without the growth-promoting additives common in large-scale commercial operations. The simplicity of how we raise them means you are getting a cleaner product, closer to what beef is supposed to be.
There has never been a better time to take a hard look at where your protein is coming from. The protein conversation is not going away, and the more people understand about the difference between conventionally raised beef and beef raised the way ours is, the more the choice becomes clear.
If you are already eating beef as part of a high-protein diet, we think you deserve to know it is the best version of that beef possible. That is what we are here for.
