Welcome to “Ask Aubrey,” a Q&A series with Aubrey Reban, cattle rancher and head of the Reban Farm family in Petrofka, Saskatchewan. Each post features one of the most common questions Aubrey is asked about ranching, farming practices, and cattle care. His goal is to give you a transparent, straightforward look into how Reban Farms raises its animals and cares for the land.

Are Your Animals Grass Fed?

The answer is yes. All of our animals consume grass and forages for the majority of their lives.

Cattle are natural grazers, and pasture grass is their primary food source from the time they’re calves. At Reban Farms, we put great care into maintaining healthy pastures and forage crops so our animals have access to high-quality nutrition throughout the growing season. Forages include not only grasses, but also legumes such as alfalfa, which provide protein and essential nutrients that help cattle grow strong and healthy.

As the Saskatchewan seasons change and the pastures are no longer green, our animals continue to eat stored forages such as hay and silage. These are harvested from our own fields during the summer months and preserved to keep their nutritional value intact. This way, even in the winter, our cattle are still consuming grass and forage-based diets.

Grass and forage feeding is the foundation of good cattle nutrition. By ensuring our animals get what they naturally thrive on, we support both their health and the quality of beef that reaches families who trust our farm.
