Reban Farms Homestead has been around since 1908 and we are proud of our Saskatchewan roots. We enjoy the cattle lifestyle and the wholesome food it allows us to produce. We are grateful to have a farm out by Petrofka Bridge along the North Saskatchewan River south of Blaine Lake.
ASK AUBREY – 1
Welcome to “Ask Aubrey,” a Q&A series with Aubrey Reban, cattle rancher and head of the Reban Farm family in Petrofka, Saskatchewan. Each post features one of the most common questions Aubrey is asked about ranching, farming practices, and cattle care. His goal is to give you a transparent, straightforward look into how Reban Farms raises its animals and cares for the land.
At Reban Farms, we often hear the question: Are your animals organic?
The short answer is no. However, the long answer reveals a lot about how we raise and care for our cattle on our farm in Petrofka, Saskatchewan.
All of the feed our animals consume is produced right here on the farm. We take pride in growing our own crops as sustainably as possible, because healthy soil and strong crops create healthy, nutritious feed for our cattle.
Some people wonder why we use fertilizer. Our belief is simple: crops are healthiest and most nutritious when all their nutritional needs are met. Fertilizers are just a concentrated delivery system of nutrients that plants need to thrive. In nature, nutrients cycle into the soil more slowly—through decaying plants, manure, or other organic matter. By placing nutrients directly into the soil, we’re ensuring that the crops receive the exact balance they require to grow strong and provide a better-quality grain for our cattle.

It’s important to understand that nitrogen is nitrogen to a plant, no matter where it comes from. The same goes for all other macro and micronutrients. What matters is that the plants have access to the right nutrients, in the right amounts, at the right time. By managing this carefully, we grow crops that keep our cattle well-fed, healthy, and strong, while also caring for the land that supports our family and our farm.
For us, sustainability means more than a label—it’s about taking responsibility for the health of our soil, our crops, our animals, and ultimately, the families who enjoy the beef we produce.
Have a question about our farm, our cattle, or how we raise our beef? Send it our way and Aubrey may answer it in a future post. At Reban Farms, we are your Trusted Saskatoon Beef Farmer and we believe in being open and transparent about how we care for our animals, our land, and the families we feed.
